Abstract

The history of Islamic education in the 18th century is still not widely studied. Most historical records focus more on the socio-political history of the Banjar kingdom. The history of Islamic education in South Kalimantan can be described in two waves of development. The first wave which occurred in the 17th-18th century, which was still simple, marked the beginning of the development of Islamic education, while the second wave marked the next development of Islamic education which occurred in that period. 19th-20th century which already knew the madrasa system. Islamic education in the Banjar kingdom in the 18th century, namely between 1700-1800 AD. It is very important to research again because this was the golden age of the Banjar Kingdom. At that time, there was a peak in the growth of Islam in South Kalimantan. In general, educational activities focused on mosques, langgars, and houses with non-classical systems. The basis of education is the Koran, Hadith, the ijtihad of local scholars, and the king's decree. Educator figures include: Sheikh Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari, Fatimah, Sheikh Abdul Wahab Bugis, Datu Kandang Haji, and Datu Muning alias Datu Sanggul. Also Sheikh Muhammad Thayyib bin Mas'ud al-Banjari, Sheikh Muhammad Nafis Al-Banjari and Sheikh Abdul Hamid Abulung.
